The Practice of Gratitude

Learning to trust God's hand, a formation through thankfulness.

Hi friend,

Welcome back to She Speaks Life.

Lately I’ve been thinking about gratitude, not the kind that comes easily when things go right, but the kind that forms you.
The kind that reshapes your perspective when life doesn’t follow your script.

There’s something sacred about learning to thank God not just for what He’s given, but for what He’s withheld.
It’s a softer kind of surrender, the moment you whisper,

“Your plan, not mine. Thank You for seeing my want, but meeting my need instead.”

Feature Story

The Practice of Remembering

True gratitude is not performance; it’s formation.
Every act of thankfulness reminds us who God is — steady, wise, unhurried.

When I look back on seasons I once questioned, I see threads of mercy woven into what felt like delay.
The doors that didn’t open protected me.
The prayers that lingered shaped me.
Gratitude is what turns hindsight into worship.

Maybe that’s what Paul meant when he said,

“Give thanks in all circumstances.”

It’s not a call to force joy, it’s an invitation to see differently.

Speak Life Practice

This week I thought we could do a few things…

  1. Thank God for what stayed closed.
Write down one door that didn’t open, and how, even now, you’re beginning to see His goodness in it.

  2. Practice noticing grace.
Throughout the week, pause to thank God for small, ordinary mercies, the warmth of morning light, a kind word, the quiet peace that meets you unexpectedly.

  3. Pray this simple prayer:
“Lord, teach me to thank You not just when I receive,
    but when You redirect.
Remind me that every ‘no’ is mercy too.”

“Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

A Final Note

Gratitude doesn’t erase hardship, it reframes it.
It’s the daily decision to trust that even in what we don’t understand, grace is working quietly underneath.

So here’s to slow, thankful living,
to seeing not only what’s been given,
but what’s been guided.

With grace,

P.S. Next week, we’ll be going back to look at the idea of “holy rhythm” and how rest, work, and worship shape the soul when they’re held in balance.
